Thanks both, not the answers I was hoping for but the one I was expecting.  As info Rajen, the sequence returned is based on a complex nesting algorithm based on VC characteristics so there is no option to build a layout.  Also this is a daily process performed by the operators so using LSMW's is also out of the equation, so am really left with the ABAP option.  Thanks both again for your input and have some points for you answers    .
