You can use method "Release" in BO BUS2012 for release your PO. this method will use BAPI for release the PO. So it will not go to transaction.

For this method you have to give Release code, If you have multiple level release then, you have to put it in loop.

I am also don't have much experience in workflow, but i have worked on similar scenario.
